Jeff Garlin was born on 5 June 1962 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was raised in Chicago and then in South Florida. In 1980, he graduated from the Nova High School in Davie, Florida. He then became a student of University of Miami and started performing stand-up comedy there. He left the degree halfway to pursue his career in comedy. Before he succeeded in the world of show biz, he had once roomed with Conan O’Brien in Chicago and both of them had briefly started a pet care service to meet their expenses. He is married to Marla Garlin and has two children.
He had done stand-up performances all over the country and is an alumnus of Chicago’s Second City theatre. His stand up is usually in the style of story telling and he generally explores his personal foibles in it. He has written as well as acted in three solo shows of Second City Theatre - ‘I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With‘, ‘Uncomplicated‘ and ‘Concentrated‘. He co-stars and executive produces the TV show ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. He had also directed many episodes of this TV show. He also appeared as “Marvin” in ‘Mad About You’. His other ventures in the field of direction were with Jon Stewart (Unleavened) and Denis Leary (Lock-n- Load). He also directed ‘This Filthy World‘ (2006). It was a one-man show performed by director John Waters.
He had appeared in many TV shows and films, including “Everybody Loves Raymond“, “The Late Show with David Letterman“, “Tom Goes to the Mayor“, “The Daily Show” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” He also appeared in the hit movie ‘Daddy Day Care’ with Eddie Murphy and in ‘Full Frontal‘, with Julia Roberts and David Duchovny. He has acted in ‘The Rocker’ (2008) and done a small role in ‘Fun with Dick and Jane’ (2005).
He had been nominated for Emmy Awards five times in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ in the years 2002-2004,2006 and 2008. In 2006, he was also nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.
